Background

For more than 50 years, Canterbury Christ Church University has been a big part of the Kent community, providing education that makes a real and positive difference in people’s lives. National Express Transport Solution has worked with Canterbury Christchurch University since 2010 and the East Kent depot has operated shuttles since September 2019 transporting 13,500 passengers in one year. The shuttle bus is operated by The Kings Ferry travel services and operates Mondays to Fridays.

Canterbury Christchurch University is based across multiple locations throughout Canterbury town such as the main campus, student and staff car park, library and sports centre. They require a regular shuttle service Monday to Friday to allow students and staff to travel from campus to campus. Shuttles are only required during term time.

Our Transport Solution 

National Express Transport Solutions provides regular shuttle services operated from our East Kent depot. A total of 16 return shuttles are running Monday to Friday 08:00 – 18:10. Daily passenger reports are provided to ensure service is being utilised and to manage the timings, vehicle size etc. Coaches have been branded and have clear visual signs and run continuously throughout the day.

Environmental Impact

By opting for a Kingsferry-run student and staff shuttle service, CCCU has bettered the environment and saved a substantial amount of carbon emissions. 

During the 2018/2019 academic year, there were between 18,000 to 22,000 rides annually, around 380-460 per week.

Kingsferry’s operation of the student and staff shuttle service across the 2018/2019 academic year resulted in the following: 

  • 518.1 tonnes of emissions saved in comparison to Car (Diesel & Petrol average)**
  • 329.8 tonnes of emissions saved in comparison to Hybrid car 
  • 30.7 tonnes of emissions saved in comparison to Electric car
  • 29.7 tonnes of emissions saved in comparison to National Rail
