Plan your travel to this year’s Commonwealth Games

Published: 26th January 2022

Your transport to this year’s commonwealth games is sorted!

Set to take place between 28th July and 8th August, this year’s Commonwealth Games are being held in Birmingham.

Birmingham is a vibrant city in the West Midlands, home to 1.1 million people and fantastic sporting venues such as Edgbaston Stadium and Alexander Stadium, that has seen a host of ground-breaking moments in sport.

The international multi-sport competition brings together athletes from across the Commonwealth and has done so since the first Games took place in 1930.

Held in Hamilton, Canada with 11 countries and over 400 athletes competing in 6 sports, the Games have come a long way since then and this year’s competition will see 72 nations and territories competing across 19 sports.

This is a spectacular feat for the competition which has a rich sporting history.

Sustainability

This year’s games are set to be the most sustainable yet, with an aim of making it the first carbon-neutral competition, the intention is to set a benchmark for future games.

One of the 2022 Commonwealth Games legacy outcomes is to support and encourage behavioural change for a sustainable future. Group travel to the games is a key way of doing so.

Group travel reduces congestion, improves air quality and thus improves the health and well-being of the environment, spectators, athletes and the local people of Birmingham.

Did you know that hiring a coach for yourself and fellow spectators can take up to 50 cars off the road?

With coach travel being one of the cleanest modes of transport, travelling by coach to the Commonwealth Games has a positive snowball effect on the environment. Reducing road congestion with coach travel allows average speeds to rise, which in turn enables engines to operate more efficiently with lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions.

Coach hire allows congestion on the roads to be reduced, parking requirements are eliminated and CO2 emissions are lowered. Coaches are also permitted to use bus lanes, making travel to various venues across Birmingham swift and relaxing.
